5 Common Habits That You Might Not Know To Be Causing Heart Damage

Like most people you might believe that eating healthy food and following a regular exercise routine is all you need to keep your heart healthy. However, you might be surprised to know that despite your efforts, you might still run a high risk of heart disease due to some common and seemingly harmless habits. Discussed below are 6 such habits that enhance the risk of damage to your heart.

  1. Remaining Seated For Too Long

Just going through workout session in every morning is not enough to keep your heart healthy. Rather you need to keep your body active throughout the day, even it means performing small activities that require you to move around. Remaining seated at one place for too long hampers proper blood circulation and tends to make your arteries stiff.  That is why it is advisable to get up and move around at regular intervals between long sitting sessions.

  1. Not Flossing Your Teeth

You might be surprised to learn that gum disease is strongly related to heart ailments. In fact, people who do not floss are known to run a considerably higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. This is because not flossing can result in the build-up of bacteria laden plaque resulting in gum disease. These bacteria can trigger inflammation in the body and this in turn can hinder the functioning of the blood vessels. You can choose from a variety of flossing tools available in the market, not only for flossing the teeth but other hard to reach areas for thorough cleansing of the mouth.

  1. Missing Out On Your Sleep

Proper and enough sleep is essential to provide your cardiovascular system with the rest it requires. Your heart works very hard during the day and the relaxation that it gets during sleep, helps in promoting your cardiovascular health. This is ensured by the dipping of the heart rate and blood pressure during the first phase of the sleep and its rise and fall during the second phase in accordance with your dreams. Chronic sleep deprivation can result in high resting cortisol besides enhancing the adrenaline levels. These levels are often the same as those experienced by people facing a stressful situation. Therefore it is essential to get enough sleep of no less than 7-8 hours every night.

  1. Drinking Too Much Alcohol

Excessive alcoholism is known to increase the risk of high blood pressure, stroke and obesity. All these factors directly enhance the risk of heart disease by a significant margin. Drinking too much alcohol results in interruption of your normal heart rhythm, which can in turn, lead to heart failure. Furthermore, it can enhance the levels of certain lipids within the body besides causing build-up of high levels of body fats, which can also lead to major heart problems. By sticking to the recommended guidelines of two drinks a day for men and one drink for women, you can keep your heart healthy.

  1. Not Eating Enough Fruits And Vegetables

Research has proved that eating fruits and vegetables can help in improving heart health by significant margins. On the other hand binging on junk food is likely to increase the risk of heart disease quite considerably. Most doctors recommend having four to five servings of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and other plant-based heart healthy diet on a daily basis. This reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by more than 20% as compared to people who take less than three servings per day.  Therefore if want to keep your heart in good health, increasing the daily consumption of fruits and vegetables is highly recommended.

By changing the above discussed habits in a positive manner, you can be sure of enjoying a heart healthy and fit life.
