Effective Home Remedies To Gain Relief From Nasal Congestion

The discomfort and pain associated with nasal congestion can be extremely frustrating and make breathing quite difficult. While there are several over the counter medicines available in the market to provide relief from nasal congestion, their regular consumption often exposes the patients to other wellness issues. On the other hand using various home remedies can provide more effective and longer lasting relief from the problem in a completely natural manner. Given below are the 5 most effective home remedies for treating nasal congestion.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar acts as a natural decongestant and thus helps to break down the mucus build up inside the nose to ensure easy breathing. Patients can mix two tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of raw honey in a cup of warm water. They should drink the concoction 2-3 times a day for a few days to get almost instant relief from stuffy nose. Alternately, the patients can inhale the steam generated by boiling a mixture of equal amounts of water and raw apple cider vinegar, 2-3 times a day.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne Pepper is a source of capsaicin, which is known to provide great relief from inflammation in the nasal passage and also act as a natural decongestant. The patients should mix half-teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder with 1 tablespoon of raw honey and consume the mixture 2-3 times a day. Alternately they can dip a cotton swab into cayenne powder and then insert it into the nose. The resulting sneezing induced by the act will help in clearing the blockage. Patients might experience an initial burning sensation which will, however pass quickly. The process should be repeated 2-3 times a day for a few days.

Garlic

The antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties of garlic make it extremely effective for getting relief from nasal congestion. It not only helps in fighting infection causing congestion but also controls the overproduction of mucus. Patients should boil 2-3 cloves of garlic in about 1 cup of water and can even add half teaspoon of turmeric to it. They should drink the mixture twice daily till the congestion is cleared. Alternately the patients can try eating fresh garlic cloves to reduce stuffiness and discomfort.

Spicy Tomato Tea

The healthy components of spicy tomato tea, which include tomato juice, garlic and lemon, prove to be an excellent remedy for nasal congestion. It also helps to improve the flow of mucus through the nasal passage. The patients need to boil 1 cup of tomato juice with 2 chopped garlic cloves, 2-3 teaspoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 1/4th teaspoon off cayenne pepper and a pinch of sea salt. They should drink this tea slowly twice a day and while it is still hot to get the best results. The remedy should be continues until the patients get relief from stuffy and blocked nose.

Turmeric

Turmeric is well known for its antiseptic, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties, which makes it an effective home remedy for nasal congestion. The curcumin found in turmeric helps to reduce swelling and inflammation of the nasal passage which provides further relief from the congestion. Patients can add 1 teaspoon of turmeric to warm milk, bring to boil and then leave it to simmer for 5 min. They should then add a little raw honey to the milk before consuming while it is still warm. The milk should be consumed twice a day in the morning and at night. An alternate method is to mix 2 tablespoons of raw turmeric juice with 1 table spoon each of lemon juice and honey and a pinch of cayenne pepper. This mixture should then be consumed 1-2 times a day to speed up the healing process and get lasting relief from congested and blocked nose.
