Effective Tips to Manage PCOS

Managing PCOS in an effective manner

What would you do if you just found out that you have PCOS- polycystic ovary syndrome? This is a condition which has affected over 5 million women in the United States alone. It can wreak havoc on your hormones and we still do not have any cure for it. Even though a lot of women manage the symptoms successfully on their own with the help of hormone therapy and medication, some women give preference to supplement conventional treatments with more comprehensive remedies. Also, there are some women who choose completely natural alternatives.

PCOS can be one of the most complicated female health problems of the present time. It is very common endocrine disorder in women in their reproductive age. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is accompanied by an array of different health problems, many of which directly affect the fertility. The classic PCOS comes with polycystic ovaries, obesity, elevated levels of androgens and irregular or absence of menstrual cycles. Although not every woman who gets diagnosed with PCOS goes through all these issues.

Cause of PCOS

There’s no known exact reason for the cause of PCOS. Nonetheless, genetic pre-disposition is said to be one of the main causes of it. The characteristic underlying conditions seen in polycystic ovary syndrome are high levels of insulin and male hormones which lead to the many different symptoms linked with this syndrome.

The symptoms:

  • Fertility issues
  • Abnormal or no menstruation
  • Pelvic pain
  • Acne
  • Thinning hair on the scalp
  • Gain in weight
  • Excessive hair growth, hirsutism- especially on the face
  • Darkened skin around the neck, around the private parts and under the breasts
  • Elevated BP level

Managing PCOS naturally

The fundamental aim is balancing the metabolic function, especially insulin and blood sugar levels. This very step can make all the difference in the relation to reducing the ovarian androgens production, which as a result will help in regulating the ovulation and effectively managing all the other linked symptoms. Here’s how you can balance your metabolic function:

PCOS Diet – Base your meals on good quality, by preference, protein and organic vegetables. Try to avoid all the fried foods, hydrogenated fats and Trans fats.

Exercise – Similarly as your diet provides the important and necessary building blocks for fertility and optimum health, exercise also plays a major physical role in harmonizing the metabolic function and balancing the hormones. Aim for doing something every day, for a minimum of 40 minutes.

Nutritional support and holistic herbal treatment – Natural inventions like herbal meds and nutritional treatments are very effective in the conjunction with exercise and diet for helping in addressing any and all the PCOS related symptoms. Also, unlike the pharmaceutical prescriptions like pills for regulating the cycles and metformin for blood sugar control, the natural medicines aid the body to naturally and gently balance on its own.

Managing PCOS with complementary and natural therapies

Complementary therapies include nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, osteopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, and chiropractic, and aromatherapy, remedial therapy like massage, reflexology and kinesiology.

Some studies have been performed on the Chinese herbal medicine and its effects and the effects of herbal supplements on the reproductive symptoms (for example, ovulation and fertility) and insulin resistance on polycystic ovary syndrome. In these studies, complementary therapy (like chromium picolinate) has often not been directly compared with the effect of a standard treatment (medical or lifestyle), so it is hard to say how effective these treatments really are.

PCOS is most definitely a challenging disorder- it is hard to diagnose, and the side effects are hard to manage. The key is to regulate the amount and the kind of carbohydrates you eat in every meal and you can final gain control over it and lead a healthy and happy life.
