This is known as the systolic blood pressure. The lower number reflects the pressure in the arteries when the heart relaxes and is known as the diastolic pressure. A normal blood pressure reading is 120/80 and reading above this number needs to be treated with concern.

In fact, most people can easily control their blood pressure levels without any medication by making minor changes in their everyday diet and living. These changes comprise mainly of the following things.

  • Making a conscious effort to lose weight in case overweight people
  • Shifting to a healthy, low-salt diet and avoiding the consumption of foods laced with sugars and fats
  • Following a regular exercise schedule and trying to lead a generally active life.
  • Limiting alcohol consumption to no more than 1-2 glasses a day
  • Quitting smoking completely
  • Making efforts to avoid and eliminate stress through activities such as medication, music, social interaction etc.
