Stretch marks, also known as striae, are pale scar like marks that appear on the body after maybe a rapid weight gain and a rapid weight loss. Stretch marks are usually associated with pregnancy but people do get stretch marks on other body parts too.

Pregnancy related stretch marks are self explanatory and most mothers are not shy of exposing their bellies; in fact some of them show them off as badge of glory, highlighting their pride in being a mother.

Here are a few other illuminating facts that you probably don’t know about stretch marks.

  1. THERE IS NO RUNNING AWAY FROM THEM

Whatever you do, wherever you go there is no avoiding stretch marks. Try asking good old Uncle Google on how to prevent stretch marks. You will get a lot of information on how to get rid of them, or about companies selling products on the same. No where will you find anything on how to prevent them in the first place.

  1. STRETCH MARKS CAN APPEAR ANYWHERE ON THE BODY

It is not only your pregnant belly that is prone to stretch marks. They can appear on the thighs, hips, arms and breasts too.

  1. STRETCH MARKS FADE OVER TIME

As all things diminish with time, so do stretch marks.  The visibility of the stretch marks will depend on the severity of the marks and type of skin.

  1. IMPROVE YOUR SKIN HEALTH WITH EXERCISE AND DIET

Although there is no getting away from them, you can reduce the severity of stretch marks by improving on your diet. A diet rich in iron, healthy fat and protein can work wonders on your skin. Other supplements like biotin and can help improve skin elasticity.

Exercises improve the overall health of your skin and make it glowing. It improves circulation to your skin giving it that healthy look which we always talk about.  The glow of a healthy skin will shadow your stretch marks. Exercise is also good for overall body health and controlling weight.

If your Mum has stretch marks whilst she was pregnant you can be sure that there is every chance that you will have them too when you have a baby.  It is also fair to say that even if your mother did not have them, you still might get stretch marks because stretch marks and pregnancy tend to go hand in hand.

  1. CURED BY COSMETIC TREATMENT?

You can reduce the appearance of stretch marks by a method called microdermabrasion.  This is done by removing the top skin layer by the use of small crystal particles blown onto the affected area.

A more effective way to reduce the appearance stretch marks is laser treatment. This technique is done by zapping the marks with pulses of light. This creates tiny wounds in the skin which when re-healing will produce new collagen.  The disadvantage of laser treatments is that they are very expensive and are not recommended for younger women.

The bottom line is that stretch marks are here to stay. There is no cream or lotion that will actually make them disappear. It is easier if you accept this fact and not be embarrassed by them. They are natural and for mothers it is a sure sign of the life that you have carried inside you. Be proud.
